The Second Time Around

Comedy

Directed by David Middleton

Performed Sept 7-17 2006

Widowed seniors find romance in their golden years, but when they decide to introduce each other to their adult children, they meet with a wall of resistance and disapproval. Although the children's own marriages are anything but perfect, they don't hesitate to give relationship advice to their parents!

Funny, fast-paced, and full of witty banter, this endearing comedy appeals to all ages.

Synopsis: Senior citizens Samuel Jonas and Laura Curtis, a widower and a widow, strike up a love affair. When they announce plans to live together without marrying so they can keep social security benefits they'd otherwise lose, their children hit the ceiling even though they were never close to their deceased parent and their own marriages leave a lot to be desired.

Sam's daughter is married to her ex analyst, a stuffy neurotic, and Laura's son has a wife who is paranoid about food additives and their sexual performance. All ends well for the elderly twosome, but not before the entire second generation is in nervous fits. And the surprise ending will be fun for everyone.

Comments from the Director: "Love is lovelier, the Second Time Around"...so the lyric of the Frank Sinatra song goes and it's true. That is, as long as it's someone else's mother or father who’s falling in love. Somehow, we believe that as our parents mature, their thoughts of intimacy and companionship fade away. Or, maybe, we just find it hard to accept that there might be room for someone else in their lives. The Second Time Around takes a look at life and love from the senior's point of view and finds humor in the opposition brought by the young. But, let's face it, young or old you can’t stop the course of true love...any time around. It has been great fun working with this talented cast to bring these wonderful characters to life. I appreciate all their hard work and patience for my idiosyncrasies.

MAUREEN SEARLE (Laura Curtis) - Maureen is a world traveler who has been acting in shows that range from Stepping Out through Noel Coward comedies to heavy drama such as Pack of Lies (about real life atomic spies.) She has also directed plays for over 10 years and is thoroughly enjoying working with David and all the cast - a happy team!

DR. JOHN PATRICK SMITH (Dr. Arthur Morse) - From real life veterinarian, to neurotic psychiatrist just how big of a character leap can that be? You've seen John in many roles at FWP, and recently as the Tin Man in Tarpon Springs unique production of The Wizard of Oz. He says, thank you Angie, Assistant Stage Manager and wife, for all your help and support.

JESSICA STROUT (Angela) - Jessica is a welcome newcomer to the Francis Wilson stage. Her past work with Avenue Players and later, in Carousel with City Players, earned her two Lary Award nominations. She thanks David for the opportunity to shine in this "cameo" role.

Meet the Director

DAVID MIDDLETON (Director) - David is semi-retired and, after an absence from theatre work for several years, has returned to active participation in community theatre. This is David's first appearance as director at FWP; however, he has been seen on stage in several of our productions. He has appeared in shows at St. Petersburg Little Theatre, West Coast Players, Oakhurst Theatre Company and the Early Bird Dinner Theatre and he has directed for St. Pete Little Theatre, and other local groups. He recently directed the very successful, Driving Miss Daisy for Island Community Theatre.

Stage Manager

RITA KITENPLON (Stage Manager) - When not in front of the footlights herself, you will often find Rita leading the troops behind the scenes. She's a favorite with all our local community theatres and you've seen her here in Anna's Brooklyn Promise and Mr. Angel amongst others. She is also on the Board of Directors of FWP. She sends her love to Steve and thanks him for his support and patience.
