About the Author

Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854 with the birth name of Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde.  His scathing wit brought him great popularity with the public for his plays Lady Windemere's Fan and The Importance of Being Earnest.

"The Importance of Being Earnest", which pokes fun at the upper classes with a blatant display of their effusive mannerisms and hypocritical attitudes was originally produced at the St James Theatre, London, on February 14, 1895. Love, reputations, social standing and fortunes are all brilliantly addressed by Wilde in his works but his own career was cut short by social scandal and he died, exiled and in poverty in France.
