Monky Business

Book By Todd Mueller and Hank Boland

Music and Lyrics by Gregg Opelka

Directed: David Middleton

Music Director: Mark Jelks

November 2-12,2006

Synopsis:

The fun-loving monks of Saint Bernard’s monastery are in a jam.  Abbot Costello and his four beleaguered brethren have just learned that a real-estate developer is about to turn their monastery into a gambling hall called Bernie’s Casino Royal.  Unless the merry Men in Brown can raise $250,000 by midnight, they are done for.  Luckily, the Brothers have a divine plan.  They’ve rented religious radio station WGOD for the night and are hosting a radio-thon fundraiser with plenty of singing, dancing and vaudeville routines.  Abbott Costello, Brother Lee Love, Brother Brooks, Brother Clarence and Brother Forte all take turns strutting their stuff, and the pledged donations from the listeners start streaming in.  But, unbeknownst to the other four, one of the monks is really a devil in disguise and is out to sabotage their plan. Good and evil race to beat a midnight deadline in this hilarious hit musical.  A poisoned venison and whipped cream pie, a radio mystery, a zany ventriloquist act, a witty Abbot and Costello inspired routing and faith, a minor miracle and plenty of great, hummable songs all combine in a crazy quilt of monks, mayhem and merriment.

Large or small, musicals are always a labor of love.   An infinite amount of time, caring, patience and, let’s not forget talent, are put forth to open a show.   And nothing is more satisfying than seeing those efforts pay off.    It has been great fun working with this talented cast and crew to bring these delightfully eccentric characters to life.  I appreciate all their hard work and their tolerance for my idiosyncrasies.     David Middleton, Director

  MEET THE DIRECTOR

DAVID MIDDLETON – David is semi-retired and after an absence from theatre work for several years, has returned to active participation in community theatre.  This season he has directed FWP’s first production, The Second Time Around and now, Monky Business.  He has appeared on stage in shows at St. Petersburg Little theatre, West coast Players, Francis Wilson Playhouse and more.  In addition to directing here, he has directed for St. Petersburg Little Theatre and other local groups.

MEET THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR

MARK JELKS –You’ll remember Mark from his wonderful work on FWP’s production of Oliver!.  Mark has been a part of nearly every aspect of the performing arts.  He has trained and performed as a dancer internationally and musically directing the national tours for such shows as Evita, A Chorus Line and Sweeney Todd.  He will be Musical Director for our season productions of The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Man of La Mancha.  Mark would like to thank his partner Anthony for his never ending support.

STAGE MANAGER

ANGIE SMITH – Plenty of “Monky” business goes on behind the scenes of every play as Angie, who returns to FWP for this production, can tell you.  She enjoys working with all the wildlife (cast members) and this show has been “heavenly” for her.  Being Stage Manager enables her to keep her eye on that rascal Brother Brooks who, in another life, is her husband, John.

MEET THE CAST

BOWEN BARRS (Brother Lee Love) – Bowen is very pleased to return to the FWP stage.  He performed here last as Phaedra in La Cage Aux Folles.  Now, as Brother Lee Love he’s still appearing in “skirts!”  Bowen thanks Rocco Morabito for his loving support and sends a big “Who’s your buddy?” out to Jake, his partner of 18 years.  Bless everyone connected to this production and to live theatre supporters like you.  Amen!

GRAHAM JONES (Stan) - Graham has temporarily put away the green eyeshade he wears as the FWP Treasurer to be the voices of Stan Beechmeyer.   Enjoy!

Trey Ryan (Brother Forte) – Trey hails from Jacksonville but has been here long enough to hit the boards many times.  Although this is his FWP debut, you’ve seen him in Guys and Dolls (City Players), Nightwatch (WCP), and Beauty and the Beast (EOT).

JOHN SMITH (Brother Brooks) – Forget the vow of silence, tell everyone - FWP cannot keep John off their stage.  He returns after appearing in this season’s opener, The Second Time Around and will be back shortly in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddigore.  As always and for always, he thanks his lovely wife Angie for being his greatest fan!

GEORGE STEFFENS (Abbot Costello) – George recently returned to acting when he performed in 1776 (TSPAC), since then he has performed with TSPAC, Carrollwood Players, and City Players.  With Monky Business he makes his debut on the FWP stage.  When not performing on stage, George and his wife, Judi, are Realtors with Century 21 East Lake Realty.

BRITTANY STOLTENBORG (Dancer) – Brittany started dancing at the tender age of three and quickly began to win dance competition trophies and prizes.  She co-captained the Countryside H. S. Cougarettes dance team.  This is her first appearance at FWP.

CHRISTOPHER STRONG (Brother Clarence) – A veteran actor, Chris has performed locally for over 25 years.  Some highlights of where you have seen him are; Oklahoma (FWP), Carousel (EOT), Gigi (SPLT), A Funny Thing Happened... (Royalty), The Mikado (Royalty), The Sound of Music (City Players) and more.  Chris has received three Lary Awards.  He is the owner of Christopher’s Hair Salon in St. Petersburg.
